Helpful items to bring to College

OK, so tomorrow is the first day of August and your Mom has probably already begun packing your car with all your stuff for school. Don't panic, all parents start to do this or they are still in denial and pretending you are not leaving. Either way, you're starting to buy dorm accessories and things you think will be helpful. So, before you ponder any longer in the aisles of Target and Walmart questioning whether you will need all those containers or the fuzzy pink cheetah rug, check out what I and many other college students have found useful to have!

  • Small tool kit (can be bought at Lowe's or Walmart)
  • First Aid Kit (fun character band aids are great too...I have Hello Kitty!)
  • Sewing Kit (even if you don't know how to sew, there will be someone who does and they can help sew back on a lost button!)
  • Stain removers (Tide To-Go stick or Shout works wonders!)
  • Clorex wipes (college dorm= germs!)
  • Power Stripes (Having 1 or 2 of these are a huge help)
  • Throw pillows (so your friends can lounge comfortably in your room ...Walmart has some good colors and deals for these!)
  • DVD's (movie nights or Lord of the Rings Marathon's are big and a great way to relax with friends so don't forget your favorite movies)
  • Disney Classics (If your a huge Disney fan and have the movies bring them and know that you are not alone with singing and knowing all the words...)
  • Shower caddy with HOLES (to help drain water!)
  • Hand Sanitizer ( Keep it on your desk and use especially if your friends are feeling under the weather...remember dorms=germs)
  • Bed Risers (can allow you to store a lot more under your bed without having a loft)
  • Duct Tape (It fixes everything!!)

My POW 2 Experience

Hey, so I got back from POW 2 a few days ago and had an amazing experience. I didn't go on POW as an incoming freshmen so, I got to experience it for the very first time along with the other incoming first years.

During the three days, we experienced beautiful sunny weather and starry nights in Stowe at the Round Hearth. The Round Hearth, is a ski resort which was cozy and had some pretty awesome Adirondack chairs outside that were a great to relax in and get to know some pretty cool people.

I don't want to spoil the weekend for anyone who has not experienced it by sharing all the details, but I will say that it was a very relaxing time to get to know some incoming students, some upper upperclassmen and faculty. The faculty were very helpful and I wish I had known some of the things they shared before coming to school. There was also plenty of time to play and feel like little kids again! Overall, it was a successful few days spent with some SMC students and faculty that I was glad to be apart of.

my summer in a nutshell

Hey everyone I thought I would check in and tell you what I have been doing and update you on things before I go on POW and begin my Florence Adventure. So this summer, I returned home to Tennessee to work and spend time with my family after living on campus last summer!

Home has been terrific and I have been reading some great books and getting plenty of time to experiment with my cooking and baking. I love going to the farmers market and cooking with local ingredients that are in season. Right now I am listening to The girl with the Dragon Tattoo on my ipod and reading Catch 22. I have been working a bit and preparing for my week up at SMC for POW (pre-orientation weekend).

I have also turned into a movie fanatic watching them all the time and scoping out the five dollar DVD's at Target! Recently, I have watched Eagle Eye and Persuasion which are two very different movies. If you have any good suggestions let me know I like a wide variety!

It has also been the longest time I have been away from SMC making me really miss campus and being up at school. Don't get me wrong my favorite season is summer, but one of my favorite places is Vermont, especially at school.

So, after POW, I will blog about the great experience and in some future posts give ya'll a taste of Nashville and the south. So stay posted and enjoy the sunshine!

What do you recommend for us to bring to the POW?

For POW you don't need all the high tech gear and equipment like WOW. The best thing I would say is to bring stuff that you will be comfortable in. We will be inside and outside, we might play some games go on a easy hike...so come with sneakers flip flops comfortable shorts and pants and a sweatshirt or two. Make sure you can layer up in case it gets cold and bring a rain jacket if you have one. Also bring a sleeping bag and pillow! Overall just bring clothes you are comfortable to wear and could play in. If you have any new SMC swag you should definitely sport it (comfy sweatpants, mesh SMC shorts, SMC flip flops!) They also should have sent you a packing list in your conformation letter, but if your still unsure call Grace Kelly http://www.smcvt.edu/studentlife/orientation/pow.asp

for the room numbers - like 100s, 200s, 300s, 400s, does that correspond to which floor you live on?

Yes! All the Quad buildings have four floors so if your in Joyce 458 you will be on the fourth floor (and in my old room)!
