2014 WOW packing review!

Hey Class of 2014, I made this quick video to help any of the students who are going on a Wilderness Orientation Weekend (WOW). Most of this stuff is already in your packet of information that you received when you got accepted for your trip. I just wanted to help by showing some visuals of items on the packing list that you will need! I'm a wilderness leader so if you have any questions just ask! Enjoy and happy camping!

On the pre-orientation day in July, should I be bringing a parent or am I able to fill out all paperwork etc?

It's up to you. Your parents can come, but they will have some down time and you would just fine doing it by yourself. Either way works and some parents come and some don't.

What is one of your favorite memories at SMC?

One of my favorite memories at Saint Michael's would have to be going to Alliot this one time with a big group of my friends. We took up two large tables and talked, laughed, ate and spent two hours in their having a great family meal together. Meals like that helped me get to know my friends really well and bring us closer together.

Is there a gym on campus for students?

Yes! The gym on campus is open for students to work out at from 7am until 9pm. Also, students can participate in intramural sports like soccer, basketball, volley-ball, softball, and some more sports in the gym throughout the semester. You can go work out or go to the gym to play basketball or racquetball with friends.

Firenze

As some people already know, I will be studying abroad during the fall semester, in Florence, Italy! I'm so excited and it's starting to sink in that I'm actually going there. Saint Mike's has this amazing program where you can choose to pretty much study anywhere in the world for a semester.

So this past semester, I applied through API to Lorenzo de Medici School and was accepted. Since then I have been following up with details, filling out forms for my program and getting my visa application together. About a week ago, I got my Visa which is one big detail I'm glad to have done. I depart for Florence on August 29 arrive in Germany and then fly into Florence.

I am very excited and can't wait to get to know Florence and all the beautiful areas of Italy. I will be taking four classes and getting credit for them. I am taking a philosophy class, a literature class on Italian travelers, a food and culture class, and finally an Italian class. I took two semesters of Italian at Saint Mike's so I'm going to be taking an intermediate class which will definitely help me speak better Italian.

I ventured to the library and book store frequently this past month studying where to eat and where to travel to. Their are so many different travel and guide books out there so I have been gathering different bits and pieces of information on a variety of topics about Florence. As August approaches I have been thinking more about what I want to pack. I decided the best idea would be to bring only a few things so I can shop a little while I'm over their.

So, my packing has begun giving me the challenge of what to bring and what to wear. Should I aspire to be an Italian fashionista? Maybe not quite, but I will not be wearing shorts or sweatshirts all the time. Italians dress very well and I want to try and blend when I'm over there and not just scream I'm American! The Saint Mike's dress code of yoga pants, a sweatshirt and UGG boots won't really fly in Florence. So instead, I have been gathering three pairs of my skinny jeans some nice tank tops and shirts along with sweaters and cardigans. I keep trying to remind myself less is more. This coming from someone who always over packs and is always prepared!

I will keep you posted as my departure date gets closer!

By when do we know what courses are we going to take next fall?

When you come for registration you get to choose your classes and know pretty much what you will be taking. So, If your coming up or a WOW or a POW you'll do all that before your trip. And if your not coming up for registration you can fill out the form and mail it back in to the registrar's office. Make sure you have a lot of back up class choices and options for registration in case you have to move your schedule around!

Embrace your Inner Child

With the start of the summer, I've decided there should be a national holiday for all adults. It should be called "Embrace your inner child day!" I came up with this idea when my family and I took a Saturday to go down to the
Chattanooga Aquarium. I had never been to Chattanooga before and once their quickly fell in love with it. It reminded me of Burlington, making me miss walking up and down Church Street.
We began our day inside the aquarium around noon and didn't leave until three thirty. It was magical! I think that getting to go experience things like this even as a grown up is so much fun. There was a section on fish and they had a pond with sting rays and some other fish where you could pet them. I hesitantly stuck my hand in and reflexively ripped it out of the water after touching the slimy fish as if it had bitten me. A women working at the aquarium loved my reaction as I resorted to my childlike instincts!
Petting a fish or gazing at three levels of all sorts of creatures and fish is important and much needed. My favorite part had to be the
penguins! I happen to adore them and stood at the exhibit for nearly ten minutes taking pictures and wishing my roommate would let me have a penguin as a pet! So I think it's key to remember every once and a while to stop and embrace your natural kid instincts and have fun for a day. Order chicken fingers off the menu and run around outside barefoot! Whatever you do make sure you have fun and maybe take a picture so down the road you can look back at it and smile remembering that day!

What's the Wilderness Program like? Are the trips fun?

The Wilderness Program is a great way for students to get out into the great outdoors of Vermont. The program runs trips in the fall and winter going hiking, kayaking, ice climbing, rock climbing, snowshoeing, skiing, and much more. These trips are led by students who are trained to be wilderness leaders and have specialties in different areas. Trips are so much fun and a great way to try something with your friends. You don't have to have any prior experience. I never had gone camping before my WOW and since then I have become a leader! Check out the facebook page and look at pictures from previous trips! http://www.facebook.com/pages/Colchester-VT/Saint-Michaels-College-Wilderness-Program/109727158711?ref=ts
